The cover design of this notebook is from Winter Plum, Mountain Birds, a famous painting by Emperor Song Huizong Zhao Ji, which is now on display in Taiwan’s National Palace Museum. This painting depicts a winter plum branch that is a little wavy but still stretches upward stubbornly, full of tenacity. On the tip of the branch, some yellow flowers are blossoming. You can almost smell the fragrance just by looking at the painting. On top of the branch, a pair of larks is leaning against each other, leading the viewer to look beyond the picture on the left side of the scroll. This illustration is clear and detailed, full of living touch. The winter plum branch is outlined with forceful lean brushes, and then rendered by wash inks; the larks and grass are painted by wash colors. The thickness of the ink and the moisture are in perfect harmony in the painting. To the left under the painting, there is a verse written in Shou-jin (slender gold) style:
Larks on the branch feeling restrained yet easy
Winter plum making the atmosphere soft and relaxed
There is a pact of ink between us
Years passed, when we are white-haired
