How important is canned tuna? It’s delicious. It’s nutritious. It’s affordable and it doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

There are four major tuna fishing areas in the world: the Pacific islands, the eastern

Pacific, West Africa, and the western Indian Ocean. Total tuna catches between 1980 and 2010 expanded from 1.8 to 4.4 million tonnes although the annual growth rate is declining at an average of 3-4%. Most catches of the principal market tuna species are taken from the Pacific (70.5% of the total catch of principal market tuna species in 2008), with the Indian contributing much more (19.5% in 2010) than the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea (10.0% in 2010).

The main market for Thai canned tuna continues to be the USA, with about 20% of total exports. 2011 saw a good recovery of this market, after a disappointing 2007, but total exports of 95,000 tones are still a far way off the record level of 111,000 tones of 2006.

Despite the return of buying interest from Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Thailand continued with its successful diversification of markets. Exports of canned tuna to Egypt (+38%) and Africa (+17%) grew strongly in the course of the first nine months of 2008. The Middle East, Africa and CIS world as a whole represents about 25% of Thai canned tuna exports. These markets are likely to grow further to 35% of total canned tuna export in 2010.
